The Silenced

A Single White Rose
In the book a rose symbolizes so much; rebellion and the White Rose.  The White Rose is a group Mareana made to make life harder for the officials.  She would pop the bus tires or hide fliers for the White Rose around campus secretly.  So this poem is about a person that lives in the same time as Mareana and is hoping that since the White Rose is doing so much around them, that they could be free.  Hope it's good!!

A single petal
Falls to the ground
Drifting through the breese
Soft.
Delicate.
It is white as the clouds
Deathly pale.

Everyone knows the secret this flower holds
Rebellion.

This rose holds my freedom
Possible freedom
I could feel it
Like a flavor in the air

I felt like it could save us
From our fate
Near in the future

The wind picked up a petal
From the wet grass
Into the sky
I wish I could be free

Drifting away from here
Like that single white petal.

Believing

Author's note: This piece was inspired by how many lies are growing in the book.  Everything that was true has been turned into a lie for everyone else to believe.  Hope you like it.

I hear the truth
I hear a lie
How do I know?
Which one to believe?

Believing is seeing
That's what they say

The truths of the world
Are twisted and vile
Turned around completely
Which one to believe?

A rumor breaks loose
A heart is broken
Two people at fault
A lie and a truth
Which one to believe?

Not Acting On What You Believe
Author's note: In the book Meleana wants to act out and resist on everything that is going on around her.  Things are getting more controlled and she has the need to rebel even more as time goes on.  In the beginning she was afraid to resist and fight back, but now she has formed a resistance group called the White Rose.  This piece I am talking about how you should take on what you believe in.

Take your dreams and wants
Make them into reality

They may seem distant
They may feel out of reach
No matter what they think
If you have determination
If you have inspirtion
You can accomplish anything

It only takes a thought
Then a dream
If you fight
If you don't stop
Whatever happens
You can
If they think you are crazy
Or they think you are incapable
Laugh and say that you can
Take your dreams and wants
To make them into reality

Who Do You Think You Are?

Author's note: Have you ever been told that you should try to the best you because you are different than anyone else?  I have been told this before in my life to be the best me that I can possibly be.  That is not exactly the case in this story.  The Art class in "The Silenced" seems to be the only place that the kids can be free to express themselves through drawing.  Secretly, the instructor is doing this and inspiring the students to express themselves in a filtered world where this is restricted.  Soon they find out what she is doing and put a stop to this threatening behavior.  Mr. Greengritch takes over the class and destroys all the beautiful artwork from the wall leaving only the cold, bare cinder block wall and disposed of the art supplies. He all asks the students one question, “Who do you think you are?”  This seems easy, but he ripped apart each students answer about their nationality and who exactly they think the are.  This man thinks that no one is special and if any person said otherwise about them not being useless, they were liars.  What he said wanted me to express in this piece if we were all the same and no one was original.

When I see others, I also see myself.  We are all the same essence of  human beings with the same look and feel to us.  Our genes may be different on the inside of us, but they have changed that and are still working on that.  No thought is original because someone is thinking it too or has already.  Everyone dresses the same every day with their grey lifeless look.  Every single person’s home is the same two story grey house with blue shutters and a clean, cut lawn with a spotless yard.

Even every ones life is the same every day with every single person.  The children sit in school all day in a locked room.  Adults work and go home everyday at the exact same time every day.  Somehow life just goes on this way with no flaws in any way.  Why doesn’t someone just change it up a bit?  They don’t know anything from what they do every single day.

People all have the same hazy ideas every day that just involve their everyday life.  No one thinks about anything else, so nothing happens. No new ideas circulate in their brain and life goes on the same.  Do you really think that this is the way to be?  Every day of every year you would do the same thing every day all the time for your entire life?

The Past

Everything used to be normal like it is in these present times.  People had freedom of speech and had rights.  There weren't any people that controlled every single thing in their lives.  The main character, Marena is trying to get to those memories to write them down.  Those were the times she had an innocent life and still had her mother.  She is having a hard time getting to these memories because they tried to wash away everything from her past.  Yet, she stashed away pieces of memories in her mind and is trying to get to them.  This is about how life used to be in this story and some of her memories.

Life used to be good, and I felt safe.  My mother was their to protect her children and be their for her family.  She loved me with all her heart and tried to protect me and our country from the corrupt government.  The country grew more corrupt and out of control like everyone else.  In those days she tried to rebel against the new power.  This just got her killed, so she is no longer there for me.

I remember when she would do my hair or read me a story.  Every time I needed her, she was by my side.  One day that all changed.  The memory is still strong in my mind.  All that blood and pain I remember.

I was coloring in my room when the window shattered and I felt the vibration through the wooden floors.  Stumbling, I fell on my back when there was another hit.  Another hit after another after another.
Just unlocking these new memories made me sick with all the blood and hurting people.

Next thing I knew, I was in the emergency room with many other hurt people. On the T.V. was frightening words of rebellion and destruction.  This seemed like a memory of something twisted in an ironic way to make it seem more real and violent.  My mind didn't make this up, we were under the power of corrupt leaders and my mother was gone.  Now my life was never secure and I didn't know or who I could trust.

I Will Not Be Silenced

In The Silenced, the people can't say or do anything they want.  They have no freedom of speech, they live in the same homes and wear the same clothes.  Also, no talking in public and if they don't do exactly what the authority wants, then they will be physically beaten. This just how they will fight the evil, powerful government and not give up.

I will resist
You can force me
You can make piles of rules to stop me
You can build fences of lies to keep me down
No matter what I will resist
No evil can control me

I'm a passionate fire
No matter what I will not be put out
I'm a courageous fighter
No matter what I will not be knocked down
I'm an ocean of ideas
No matter what my ideas will not be controlled
I'm a piece of originality
No matter what I will not be treated the same as others

I will be different
I will stand up
You can't push me down with restrictions
I am free to be me
With all of my ideas
And I will resist no matter what they say

  1. I love this poem. It is so independent, and the book sounds like it would be made into a horror movie! I love how you can make things that are bad and ugly in the world, and make them beautiful.

  2. Wow! I love the poem; it really brings up the topic of the novel and works as a piece of poetry at the same time. Very cool. Also, the response titled "The Past" was absolutely excellent. I enjoy seeing how you are moving from one form to another, seamlessly, with expertise in different ways of writing. Thanks.

  5. Commenting on who do you think you are

That world would be super creepy. If everything stayed the same, that would creep me out. Also, in your author's note, I think when Mr. Greengritch does what he does, that may be symbolizing something.
